Old Coach Vineyards’ name is a historical reference to the Overland Stagecoach Trail that ran through the land where we now grow our grapes. This old coach road was an offshoot of the mid 1800’s network of cross country mail lines known as the Butterfield Stage. Connections ran from San Diego’s East County desert through the coastal foothills that is now Old Coach Vineyards . . . on their way to the Poway Coach Station before continuing South to San Diego or north to Los Angeles. We seek to embrace the deep history of the land in both our wine and label.
Finding this land in 1988, our family was drawn to the rugged beauty of our woodland wilderness, wild and domestic creatures, waterways and a desire for living in harmony with the earth. We have carefully tried to balance organic and sustainable agriculture and new and innovative technologies. We are 100% estate grown, produced, bottled and marketed right on the estate. We are 100% solar powered.
Appreciating and having studied our climate, terroir, and sun, we specialize in 11 mediterranean varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, Primitivo, Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, Nebbiolo, Aglianico, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.
With generations of French winemaking in our backgrounds, we have carefully cultivated friendships with winemakers and their educators in other countries to learn and exchange ideas of wine growing and winemaking, traveling regularly not only to France, but Italy, Spain, Portugal, Madera, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and other globally recognized wine regions. We have brought back technologies and equipment to make our winemaking more state of the art without loosing the fine creative artisan qualities our wines are noted for.
Our sons and grandchildren are regularly involved with all aspects of wine growing and winemaking, from planting to harvesting to our in-house lab testing, right on through to bottling, labeling and marketing. We are truly a multi-generational family operation.
Our frequent travel in pursuit of learning more about “this marvelous living creature we call wine” precludes us from having a tasting room. But rest assured our travels keep us globally connected with technology to fill orders from just about anywhere in the world and allow us to bring home to you more knowledge and fun to share with our loyal following.
The creative genius of a business model which does not include a tasting room overhead, is web and hand held based, allows for lower prices for highest quality wines. So, join and follow us on our pursuit of excellent wines.
